Information, lesson plans, book reviews and more for the MRSD Elementary library staff.
Oh where oh where did my little blog go??
For any of you who check this blog, you may have noticed that it disappeared for a few days (as I did!).  Apparently it got "hijacked" by a offending computer at the high school who took it over....  or something like that... way too technical for me to understand.  Anyhoo... it's back and I'm happy!
A Book by Mordicai Gerstein
In this new picture book by Gerstein, a girl and her family live in a book, sleeping only when it is closed.  The pictures are drawn from the perspective of the reader looking into a book, or the characters looking up and out.  The young girl decides she needs to find out what kind of book she lives in and in doing so, writes her own story.   Funny, insightful, clever look at storytelling, writing and perspective.
Roaring Brook Publishers (9781596432512)  for K-Grade 3.
Blogging in the school library
Currently I'm taking a graduate class on using blogs & wikis to foster literacy, an online class through the Univ. of RI.  Obviously I'm using it through this blog, but I'm also creating a blog to use with 4-6th graders to promote the Great Stone Face Books - take a look!  I just came across a great list of other ways to use blogs in the school library - check it out!
BookTube
Yahoo!! I wrote a proposal to NHEMA (NH educational media association) for Melissa and me to do a workshop on BookTube.  I just heard that it has been approved.  So, we'll be presenting a workshop to other NH librarians about BookTube in May.  Stay tuned for details!
Caldecott & Newbery Winners
Well, I have to admit that I was glued to the computer to listen to the live webcast of the awards.  Unfortunately due to the poor satellite reception it ended up being a podcast with no video.  I was able to hear both the Newbery & Caldecott announcements and jotted down titles in a mad rush.  I am so pleased that Beth Krommes won - she's from NH!! and I have followed her work for the past couple of years.  I love Neil Gaiman as an author and am right now in the middle of The Graveyard Book.   I have to admit that I can't put it down - very suspenseful and engaging and creative.  In fact, I'm going to stop blogging and go read...
Shelfari
Shelfari - creates bookshelves featuring your favorite books, what you are reading, have read or want to read... plus you can rate them.  Think I'll create one for the Great Stone Face Books!
Wordle
I'm "in love" with a website called Wordle!!  www.wordle.net
This is an amazing free resource with incredible educational applications.  Basically you just type a list of keywords and click create and they are put into a free form "cloud".  You can change fonts, colors, layouts with a click of the mouse.  You can print and/or save them to pdf (if you have a pdf program installed like Adobe).  Have fun and play with it... but remember that you also have to work! ;-)
